Ian Hultquist is a renowned composer, producer, and sound designer for film, documentaries, and television. Formerly a member of the successful band Passion Pit, Ian has crafted powerful scores for projects like Mommy Dead and Dearest, The First Monday in May, My Blind Brother, Memoria, and Dead City.

We visited Ian at his studio in London, UK, where he gave us an inside look at how he uses the GForce Oberheim TVS Pro virtual synthesizer.

My very first impression of the TVS Pro is that it’s loud, but in a good way. I like that when you play it, it has power to it.”

Ian has been into music most of his life. He started to notice his love for music in 5th grade when he started playing alto saxophone and joined the school jazz band, and soon after got into guitar where he played punk pop covers, eventually forming bands with friends. He started playing with a group of guys that formed the band Passion Pit, and later on realised his desire for scoring and wanted to get back into it.

“I usually will start kind of jumping through presets because I like to find a sound that kind of like sparks something in me. I hear a lot of great presets, but I know that one of them is really going to speak like, oh, this can work. This is going to fit in the palette that I think I’m creating at the moment.”

“Once I have it in front of me, that’s when I might go in and start playing with it, seeing what can I do to this so it’s not just copy paste. What can I do to make it a bit more unique? And that can be either going to the actual synthesizer and messing with the patch or it could be the way I process it through other effects like distortions or different reverbs and making it feel a bit more unique to the project itself.”

“The presets that it comes with, first of all, are remarkable.”

“It feels like you’re working with a real Oberheim synth in front of you, the way that the oscillators work with each other, they react in a very neutral way and it doesn’t feel like it’s another virtual instrument.”

Features such as the sequencer and SEM Split add movement and flexibility. The fact that you can create your own sequence with so much ease is a real plus for producers, composers, and creators.

“I’ve been really impressed with what the GForce Oberheim TVS Pro can do. They sounds are super lush and full sounding. It has the flexibility to apply itself to a lot of different places.”
